home router audit scanner

Are there any scanners/tools that can be used to scan/identify vulnerabilities on home wireless router/and PC's firewall? Can you detail which software - would prefer free if possible?

And also, aside from firewall which i am comfortable with - if you had a security issue on your wireless router - what impact could that have on your PC's security? Could it grant them access to your PC and data, or could piggyback on your internet connection? Could they do anything malicious to you with just internet access via your wireless?

If anyone could identify or provide a few examples on weaknesses of wireless routers installed default "out the box", and potential impact if someone took hold of that vulnerability on that router, what they could do, that would be interesting to here...

Your router will have an ip address for example of 192.168.1.1. The router then assigns internal ip addresses to each pc connected to it which would look something like this.

pc - 192.168.1.100
laptop - 192.168.1.101
printer - 192.168.1.102
ipad - 192.168.1.103

and so on.

It is free for personal use in a non enterprise environment...

I believe it will scan routers for vulnerabilities. It has been a while since I used it, when i did i used it mainly for PC's but i think it does routers too I would give it a shot. You just install it on a computer and run the scans from there and it will give you a report with vulnerabilities.

you wireless router will have its own IP, one way to find it is to run an IP scan on your network, and you should be able to tell which one it is from the list of live IPs. If your wireless router is your only router then it is probably your default gateway and you check your ipconfig for that. then pop it in a web browser and you should see the web interface for the wireless router.
