Hooking cell phone up to computer for internet use

I'm thinking about getting a cell phone from Alltel and was wondering would i need to buy special software to install on my computer to be able to use the internet off the cell phone on my computer?
 
Like hooking an internet capable cell phone, to a laptop and getting internet anywhere?


I want to do something like that with my smart phone and a laptop.
 
Depends on the phone you get, If it has WIFI and your computer has WIFI then ya sure. But any other way I dont think so. I have an alltel phone and when I called their "tech support" said no...
 
had problems too,i dunno if it works but i was trying to use my sony ericsson k750's internet on my pc using the mobile networking wizard, couldn't connect at all
 
I'm not sure if it'll work with Alltel and the whatever phone you have, but about 2 or 3 years ago I used my old Samsung N400 with Sprint and I was able to use a cable to hook up the phone to the computer, but I only got dialup speeds.

it depends where you are to what speed you get. in places with low signal, you get low speed, i think.

it costs a bomb to run your internet through your phone though doesnt it? my dad uses his work phone for it, but they pay for it...
 
it does cost a lot of money to run internet through a mobile phone.

What you need is a mobile that is compatible with doing this and so has a "modem" facility on the phone. my old samsung had it. My samsung has a usb cable that was used to connect them together
 
I use my mums Motorola v3 RAZR to connect to the net whenever we have problems. It comes with a motorola phone tools CD, all I do is install it and press connect via GPRS, it's a bit faster than dial-up but perfect in an emergency. ;)
 
Its $30 a month for unlimited internet access on my phone.

Pretty much where ever I go, I get an 'E' which is the strongest internet connection.

Could I hook it to a laptop and get internet on the laptop?
