im wanting to upgrade my ram of 3gigs to 3.5 sicne thats all 32 bit reads.

way my slots are set up is first 2 are 1 gig sticks and other 2 are 512 sticks.
thier dual ch of course.

now if i were to take one 512 out and add a 1 gig stick there would i ruin anything as in clocks or the dual channel.

With a pair of 1gb dimms along with two matching 512mb dimms you would run those with one of each on each channel to see the dual channel mode enabled. Increasing the amount on one channel may still see the dual channel mode active but tend to be a mismatch since equal amounts on both channels offers the best performance.

With memory prices falling you may want to consider replacing the pair of 512mb dimms with a matching pair of 1gb dimms to see things on an even level for both channels. The question here would be on what types of programs you are and will be running since most desktops and laptops alike fare well with only 2gb of memory installed for the average user.

thanks. im not the avg user on this computer.

I do many eiditng and dvd encoding and gaming as i end up idling at 1gig of ram. so i might jsut swa both out to have same brands workign together

I couldn't help notice Kingston and the HD 2600XT in your sig there since I've been running the MSI version of the 2600XT and Kingston Hyper X 800 memory replacing the pair of 1gb with 2gb dimms seeing just a little faster in the timings dept. 4-4-4-14 for the 2gb and 4-4-4-12 for the new pair

I could have simply left the first pair in by moving each over to the second slot to see a 6gb total of what? I can easily go back to 2gb here despite video capturing/editing and other loads and still have a good amount of free ram leftover.

With 4gb in now running the 32bit version of Home Premium and XP Home the task manager in Vista reported some 3.581gb for the total available with over 2,8gb free. That's roughly about 700mb taken up. When right clicking on the MyComputer icon for properties there the 4gb amount is shown.

yea my timings are decent but hoping the upgrade will not casuing any problems which i doubt it will as ill stay with kingsotn for the other pair

The pair of 2gb dimms just bought for the system only saw $60.99 at newegg. That was PC2-6400 1.95v memory while the first pair was 1.9v only a slight difference where both pairs could run together.

All but one 4gb 1,8v kit seen at the link here sees a Cas Latency of 5 over the 6 you are currently seeing there. Actually you would be seeing slightly faster timings by simply swapping out what you have in now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...description=&Ntk=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=

Best two out of three sets seen there. The difference isn't tremendous but will help in gaming as well as a few other things. I was replacing the Hyper X performance memory here while those are the standard seen at the page there.

siunds godo to me i might buy a 4 gb kit and keep other 2 kingstons in and have 6gb for hte dual booting of 32 and 64 bit vista

The idea of getting into the 4gb kit by itself would be to see a full 4gb setup plus the faster timings for a slight boost. If you mix them up the faster memory would be slowed down somewhat to the first. That would more or less defeat the purpose instead of having the old memory onhand for spare.

What make and model board are you running now? The specs on that will show if you can go with the Hyper X 800 memory instead being only a few bucks more but performance memory. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104043
