Hoping theres software for this...

Ive got a very unlikley idea (Being the tech n00bie I am)

I want to be able to get some screenshots of a directx game, any game, with the maximum resolution, with my average little 17" Flatscreen CRT. I hope to get the shot in a specific moment in play, in split seconds if possible, so the shot isnt missed, but that probley isnt possible.

Ive been disscussing on another forum HERE IS THE DISUSSION (I am not trying to advertise, delete if need be)

The current theory:

I could set up Macro to enable (With a hotkey, while a directx application is running) a peice of software (which probly dosnt exist yet) that acts as a virtal monitor (Of course you cant see anything becuase the real monitor disables) and in that time macro can increse the resolution of the directx application to the cards maximum, take the shot and save it to a file. After this process is completed (or failed) the genuine monitor and resolution will be renabled.

another theory that was disscussed earlier, but dissmissed becuase of the stress on the card etc:

I want the computer to think im using a monitor that is capable of higher resolutions than it is, thus allowing high resolutions, but I then want the 'program in question' to restrict the displayed resolution to one the monitor is capable of, but since the directx program is still runnning at that high resolution (And the monitor is the only thing displaying a lower resolution) it should alow for high resolutions screenshots.

Trying to clarify the above theory to others:

Ill try to be clearer.

Bottom line- I want to run a really high resolution on my computer but I want it restricted to a mangagable size to display on my monitor. Since its really giving out the high resolution, when I printscreen I should see that resolution, but the monitor is restricted to a managable resolution.

Graphics card plays speed.exe at high resolution, 'program in question' realises this resolution is too high for the monitor and restricts the displayed resolution, but only the displayed resolution, not the resolution the game is actually running at.

I havent really got the time to explain properly (Hopefully the thread helps) so I hope you catch on, and please refrain from posting (Just buy a new monitor/ just use what you have/ why the hell do you want to do that/ your theory sucks) because that isnt the point of this exersize.

Please help validate the theory, or dissucuss another way, or suggest some programs. I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum, move it if need be.

Although, what this thread is really about, is getting hold of, or creating a program like the 'program in question':

Thanks in advance. I really hope someone can help. I know its all a bit insane.

Well fraps does the screenshot parts just as well as the printscreen does, but its not a very good virtual monitor, thanks anyway.;)
