Horrible internet

Okay, I've had this for quite some time and today I wanted to look for some help, because it isn't getting better at all.

I have some decent internet, I can browse sites with it, download things and play games. However, for some unknown reason my internet suddenly slows down a lot.

I was playing a game, and my internet often works great, but then suddenly my ping goes from 20-30 to 200-2000. This kept going on for about 40 minutes, in that time I could hardly open any website as well. During this time I also used a speedtest on my iPod, which surprisingly actually did have a good connection.

Now my question is, how can I see what's wrong with my internet (or my computer) and how do I fix this annoying problem which I've been having for months?
 
This could be a number of things.. Is your computer getting updates from Microsoft Or is your AntiVirus getting update to slow down your computer..Also depend on the time of day you are on the net.
 
You should run speed testers at different times to confirm if it is actually your speed that is dropping or possibly some faulty hardware.

Run a speed test when it`s running normally, then run another when it slows right down and compare the speeds.
 
If you're using a wireless adapter reinstall drivers. If the problem persists run by Walmart, get a USB adapter and try it. If it's still giving you problems then return it, if not, then keep it.

My internet was giving me serious problem for several months and I even reinstalled Windows only to discover that my wireless adapter was dying.
