Hot cpu

I have just brought a new AMD athlon xp2800+ processor and installed it in my newly built tower, and when i check the hardware monitor in the bios it is reading my cpu at 58 c and that is from a cold boot if i leave it running for 30 mins the temp goes upto 71 c which seems very hot to me,

is there anyone out there who can suggest a way of coolin it

i have a pcchips M848A mobo
and 512mbs of ram at 400 mhz
40 gig hard drive
speeze heat sink and fan for the cpu can handle a cpu upto xp3200+
and 4 case fans various sizes

Lol

A better cooler perhaps? I dunno but it seems that the one you are using is not really effective at all. I am not here to suggest any good ones as I am not an expert at that. I think that the temps are quite high even for a CPU like yours.

JAN :)

Thanks for your replys

I am going to order a new heat sink and fan and see if that will sort it,any ideas of what would be best.

and when i brought this heat sink and fan it already had the thermal grease on it so i thought it was all right going to buy some thermal grease and try to apply some my self.

How do you clean the compound off the cpu, and where do you apply the grease on the cpu all over or in a certain place :)

Thanx again for your replys

- Wipe it off with a cloth/finger and then go over with rubbing alcohol :)
- Put about a grain o rice worth of paste on the actual chip (i.e., the middle) and mush it around :)

was it pastey, or was it more like a pad? the pad's don't work half as well sa paste will. i took apart my laptop and applied actual grease where a lil pad was on the heatsink, it's WAY cooler now lol. Arctic Silver 5 is what you want:)

It was more of a pad on the heat sink I got was a big square covers most of the processor.

Got my thermal grease (Artic Silver) and will apply it tonight so i will let you all know if that sorts it

Cheers for your help :)

Or the OCZ Ultra5 :) (which is usually cheaper and comes with the same specs)

interesting, never heard of that stuff. if it's cheaper and just as good i'll try it out. almost out of AS5 after i put it on my laptop.

Sorry i took so long to get back to you guys. had some other probs

I applyed my thermal grease and the temp seems to be ok running idle at about 39 c and the max temp it has been so far is 45 c so i think it is ok

if any one think it is still running to high please reply as i aint got a clue what the optimal temp is thanks

thanks for all your help
