How can i format portable hdd?

I want to format my gf's wd passport. But as she's used it on her mac, I cant open it in windows.
We no longer have the mac, So how can i format it? From boot screen maybe?
 
Can't you still use it like normal? I use flashdrives on mac's and windows at the same time. As long as it isn't the hdd with the operating system, shoudn't you be able to plug it in like regular?
 
No when i plug it in it just shows the installed software, Its not showing the 500gb of space. I want to format the software off and then maybe it will read it like it does my memory keys?

did you try formatting it through Disk Management?
 
Right click on My Computer > Manage. Then in the left pane choose "Disk Management". Scroll down till you see the external drive. Then right clock on it and select Format.
