How can I get better wi-fi signal?

Hello, all.

I typically have always had the modem in my room, and therefore, I always get the best connection. But due to my uncle coming in and being here to attend to my sick grandfather, he has taken the modem near the kitchen, for he needs it for his job on the computer.

My house is a one story house, and we have verizon DSL which is 3.0 mbps ( I know not the best).

We have the modem in the kitchen, then across the entrance room a little to the south is a wall, then beyond that wall is my room, so relatively speaking, it is not that far away. I get 4/5 bars on my laptop on the bed, but on my desktop I barely get any perhaps because it is under a desk.

Anyways, I was wondering if I could do anything so i can get a good signal here in my room, almost like if the modem was still in my room. Would a simple router do the trick or do you recommend a specific one or what?

What do you mean my modem is a router? If I get a router won't it provide better signal. I am only about 90 feet from the modem, ( with the wall in my room). Also, sometimes the connection varies, like sometimes it is not as good, but right now it is decent. I have 3 bars now, but there is no way a router would fix this problem?

If you are using wireless, then your modem is called a wireless gateway which means its a modem and router all in one. Hooking up a second router to an ISP's gateway can be a pain.
