How can I play the old Doom games again

I haven't found a game I like in 7 years. The last one was Quake 4. I have all the Doom, Quake, Unreal etc. games that I would like to play again. I have plenty of removable hard drives and DOS 6.22 which might not even work but the oldest OS I have is ME so does anyone know how I can play these old DOS and 3.1 windows games?

Old Games

What operating system do you want to play them on? Are they able to install?
These games or DOS and old windows games and I would like to play them on XP but I'm not sure how to do that? You can't install them direct to XP so I need some kind of compatibility mode or Virtual XP mode I guess and I don't know anything about it. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I've been able to run them directly in XP without an issue (both of the original DOOM games). If that doesn't work for you, you could always use DOSbox.

if compatibility mode doesn't work, dosbox will be your only option. of course you could probably find an old win98 machine on ebay on ebay pretty cheap and use that. I'd say anywhere between $10 and $50 would get you something that would probably smoke those old games. it's for stuff like that I keep my old packard bell around for.

IIRC you should be able to play it on ME just fine, it should support DOS programs just as well as 98 did. If you have a CPU with virtualisation extensions, you could install it in a virtual machine and play it with pretty much native performance instead of having to bother with getting an old machine up and running.
