How can I speed up my XP box?

PapaGeek

New Member
OK, first of all I know I did not load my PC properly years ago. I should have made a C and D drive and should have had all the install disks in one place so I could reload the C drice and get my speed back.

OK, I did not do that and my XP box is really starting to grind to a halt.

Do any of the “speed up my PC”, “make your PC run faster”, or any other such package actually work?

I want something more than just a registry cleaner. I want it to check what is running, and what was started at boot time. List the odd stuff and ask if I want to keep it.

So, can anyone recommend any of the products as actually something that does work?

Hi Papa give us your PC specs and when windows was installed on the PC

Ram , CPU ,hardrive size and space left ,

Cheers and we will take it from there

here are some popular and well rated system maintenance tools, all are free.

PapaGeek,Download an application called "Speccy",Install and tell us what it says for your Cpu,Motherboard, and memory. :)

It could just need a good Defrag,Tuning up..But if its really messy,I would consider a fresh install of Xp.

What do you use your system for?

Thanks, I will download Speccy when I get home tonight.

Xp was installed quite a while ago and I’m not sure I have all the proper disks for a re-install of all of my software. OK, I know that is a total no-no! “Next time” I will do it right!

I started Spybot S&D before I left for work this morning and I run Kaspersky as my virus protection.

As the name “Papa”Geek indicates, I’m 64 and actually left college in 1967 to join the Army to learn computers. Only grad students in a few colleges did anything with computers back then, and most of the work was done for the military. I got my degree in “data processing” after the army, but it was a joke. In the army I was writing operating systems and building my own hardware from chips, college was pushing punch cards through a reader to add numbers – but the diploma was a piece of paper!

I use my PC to follow my IRA’s and plan for retirement. I also design web pages and write web design software using Visual Studio 8 in C++ and C#.

When you say a while ago considering XP is now in its 12th year roughly how long has this install been on the drive ,

If the scans come up clean you could just clone the drive no need for reinstall

You can make xp very fast heres a few tips
Turn off visuals
Download game booster from IObit http://www.iobit.com/gamebooster.html
Just a great program stops useless proccess and it adds tweaks to xp to make it faster. That's lots of other stuff u can do just google "how to make xp faster"
One more thing if it was faster let's just say 2 weeks ago you can just use system restore with comes pre loaded with xp and is always on and backs it up every time you install something or make a modification so I would just system restore It or use game booster.

As requested, Here are the results from Speccy.
I expanded Operating System and its process list.

Under no circumstances, do you download anything that says it speeds up your pc besides Ccleaner. Any of those "speed up my pc" programs are actually useless and cause more problems then anything. You need to answer a few questions for me.

1. When was the last time that windows was freshly installed?
2. Have you scanned your system for malware with Malwarebytes Antimalware? I know you have an antivirus program but that don't mean nothing these days.
3. Have you downloaded and ran Ccleaner so that it deletes all the old temporary system and internet files causing your pc to slow down?
4. Do you have lots of toolbars installed?

Here is the start of the cleaning process if you haven't done it yet.

1.

Download and run Ccleaner

After the program has been installed, open it and click on run cleaner. This may take a few minutes if never ran before. Exit the program when it has finished.

2.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

3.

Open Ccleaner again, but this time click on the tools button on the left side, then click on the uninstall button. Then click on the "save to text file" button on the bottom right. Then copy and paste the contents of that file back here so we can make sure you don't have any bad software or broswer addons installed.

After you post these logs, I will look through them and recommend things that need to be done. By the look of your specs, your computer shouldn't be slow. Most likely its just bogged down by unneeded software and infected by adware.

First of all, your comment about those “speed up my PC” programs is exactly what I suspected. That is why I started this thread.

1. Unfortunately, it has been many years since I did a fresh install. I realize this was a big, big mistake, and I’m not sure I have all the install disks for all my software, so doing a fresh install is out of the question. I’ve learned by my mistake, next PC will not be handled this way.
2. I ran Spybot S&R yesterday while I was at work. I thought Kaspersky was going to protect me from that crap, but Spybot found 19 infections on multiple files. I fixed them last night.
3. Spybot also asked and I said yes to deleting my temporary files
4. No, I do not have a lot of extra toolbars. The only “extra” that I run is Grease Monkey on Firefox which I use for on-line gaming at Conquer Club, basically playing “Risk” on-line.

I also opened my computer last night and defragged my disk drives.

The system is way faster now, but I will still read all that is in this thread to increase the speed even further.

My thanks to the group for the advice that has been given.
