now i remember hearing that my baord chipset thingy (i tihnk thats what it was called) taeks 3 gb of ram max

i currently have 4 slots, and 2 are taken, so shuld i go and get 2x1gb ram?

if this is reccomended, can someone please guide me to some high quality ram os i can upgrade to 3gb, or is pc3200 outdated and u guys reccomend a new mobo

sry i havent kept up with comps for like a year and im so lost, but thnx for all the help

Since you have an HP upgrading the mobo may be difficult. PC3200 is getting older now but there should still be quite a few around. 1GB PC3200 modules usually require 2.6V (most OEM boards lock memory voltage at 2.5V).You can put up to 4GB in but most PCI devices use addresses around the 3GB range so the RAM is unavailable.

I'd go with 2 more 512MB modules unless you have a real pressing need for 3GB.

The only thing to really watch out for is single and double sided RAM. They don't always play nicely together. If all your current RAM came with your PC, it's probably some generic stuff.

so i might as well get the cheapest 2x512 ddr400 pc3200 ram?

and how can i tell if what i have is double sided?
do i open the case and look to see if it looks identical on both sides?

and how do i tell the sides on newegg?

once again sry im so noob

The easiest way to tell is to look at the RAM. If it has chips on both sides it's double sided, otherwise it's single :)

I don't think newegg lists them as single or double sided, you might have to email their sales people. Most of them will probably be double sided.

oh i tihnk i heard something that your ram will only run as fast as your slowest stick of ram. . . is that what your saying cromwell?

if so, how do i know what speed i have, does it say it on the stick?

Yes, that's it exactly.

You can use CPUz (I linked in earlier) to find out what speed your RAM is now. It's probably PC3200, it's a not a real old system and I don't see HP putting anything slower in.
