How can i transfer files between desktop and laptop?

Hi there, i need some help because i have just brought a new laptop and want to transfer lots of files from my desktop onto my laptop. I want to do it through a cable so i was wandering if anyone out there knows what cable i need to buy to be able to do this???

You can simply get a crossover cable and plug directly into the ethernet ports that would probably be the fastest and easiest..

We did this at school and it was really simply and fast to set up..
 
another way to do it, although takes a little longer but just as easy, put the files you want to transfer onto an external hard drive, then plug the drive into your laptop and take them off.
