How can I transfer files directly from one laptop to another?

Hi all. My dad just got a new laptop, and I need to transfer his documents and pictures from the old one to the new one. Is there a way to do this directly, maybe by connecting the two laptops? Or do I need an intermediate step like an external hard drive to put the files on first?

You can network the 2 together providing they are on the same network. However, sometimes that can be a pita getting it to work correctly. My suggestion would be to just use a external drive to transfer them from one to the other. You'll be done in no time.
