how can i transfer my entire hard drive?

If you are reformatting then you do not want a complete copy or "image" of the drive
You just need to backup all your data (My Documents; registrations; Internet settings; email so forth) to your external drive

Then once Windows is installed nice and clean again, then return the backups
Note: You could just copy and paste entire folders (ie My Documents) to the external drive
And many programs have an "export" button to backup things such as emails

Is that what you wanted to know?

i actually dont have a virus or anything, i jsut wanna reformat. have everything fresh. i want EVERYTHING to be copied every single thing.... how do i do that? also how to i save my favorites in firefox onto my external?

favourites in Firefox is known as "Bookmarks"
Just search your drive for "Bookmarks", and save it to the external drive or write to CD
You can also backup your Bookmarks using Firefox itself, read HERE on howto do that

There is no need to save everything, when backing up
Unless you want to put everything back on the drive again (obviously only through imaging, most users prefer > Acronis)
But because you want to do a clean install, folders like "Windows" or "Program Files" or thousands of other system files do not need to be backed up

Why would you want to backup Windows System Files? They are automatically installed on a clean install of Windows

i want to back up every file, mp3, document, image, everything. not the windows settings etc.

Note: You could just copy and paste entire folders (ie My Documents) to the external drive
i.e.
Start > run > %userprofile%
Right click on My Documents, and select Copy
Go to your external drive, and select Paste

Also Search your computer for other areas that your Data may exist
i.e.
Start > search > *.mp3
Repeat for other extensions ( *.Doc; *.DocX; *.BMP; *.JPG etc etc etc)
As some users put their data alsmost anywhere, but generally My Documents
