can you please elaborate. I dont quite understand what this means. Thanks for your help

I just backup all my important stuff on a USB flash drive, and if I need to restore, or change linux OS I just load it from the boot disc, then add my stuff from the flash drive.

if you want to make a image of your drive, the dd command will take any; folder, file, or drive and convert it to a iso image that can then be reconverted to a file system.

just go to the command prompt and type "dd if=/dev/hda(or what ever your / file system is) of=/dev/sda(or what ever your external hard drive is)" and let it run

I would not use compact discs or DVDs to backup information with. They can get scratched or damaged too easily ruining your backup data. Buy an 8 gigabyte flash drive or an external hard drive.

All you need to do also is just backup up the files you can't replace if you had to reinstall the operating system.
