How could I connect two desktop PCs together?

Edit: This post has been answered.

First of all, I'm not quite sure this is the right forum for me to be posting in, but I guessed since it had to do with connecting two computers together, it would be a networking based question. Anyways, what I'd like to do is to connect two computers together so that way they can share resources, or rather make one run the OS or some of the hardware taxing programs and the other to run video games or other hardware. I've heard of daisy chaining, but I also heard that a simple cross over cable would do it. How could I execute this and which method should I use to do so? Or would this even be worthwhile or even possible? Thanks!

I have done this and you need to buy or make a crossover cable. In my case I made a crossover cable. I had a laptop that got WIFI that I connected to the desktop and used ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) to give my desktop Internet access. What this means is that the laptop provided the Internet for my desktop. You can share files this way too! I would Google about sharing files over two Ethernet connected computers.

If the computers are far away then it's best to just do it through the router.

Auto MDI/MDIX found on all semi-recent network adapters alleviates the need for specifically having a crossover cable.

As stated usually you'd just want to use the LAN switch portion of a consumer grade router.

You can connect two computers together using a crossover cable and setting static IP's, or using a router. That will let you share files, but not share load and have one PC run hardware intensive apps like you are hoping.
