How do Apple compare to own builds

I've for a long time been under the impression that Apple are expensive when you look at the specs compared to a computer you would build yourself. And obviously given the funds, I can make my own build as powerful as I wanted. Do Apple compete when it comes to high end computers. As I just can't get my head round why people pay for them, this is not an intentional dig at Apple, each to their own after all, just pure curiosity. Is there an Apple computer as good as any you could build, and could it be upgraded.

Well I think the reason pay the premium for Apple Macs is because they want OS X but on a powerful desktop. That's really the only reason why you'd spend the money on say a Mac Pro.

Apple made the transition to a luxury brand a while back - a lot of people buy their products for the status symbol. They are no different than Lexus or Rolex; though the products are at a more-reasonable purchase point for consumers ($400 for an iYuppie5 vs $4000 for a watch or $55000 for a car). They have an in-demand product (which was created solely by marketing) and because of all the hype they can charge a premium.

Do they make high-end systems? Well, high-end is relative to the user. Are those systems cost-effective? No, but then again, when you get into higher-performance and cutting edge technologies, they never are. Will they compete? To a degree, but given the severe lack of customization you can do with Apple hardware, dollar for dollar a custom-built system will always have the advantage.

Thanks for the replies, so pretty much for the rich then, I know I struggle to get an acceptable gaming rig without Apple, I've never used their software, so I can't really comment on that. But I'm assuming if you're a gamer, you're better off not using Apple then.

Well if you're a gamer you probably want Windows because that's the platform the vast majority of games run on.
