How Do I Access A Device connected to My Modem?

hi guys and gals, i just moved everything around, i got a wd live plus box connected to my modem. and i got my pc connected to my router.

modem is a motorola, has 4 ports in the back. wd link software cant find the wd box, im assuming where it has to be setup router to talk to the modem, but i wonder how?

i cant connect the wd box to my router as it'l be a long wire run. is it possible having it work the way i have it? thxs, shawn

sure, i have a wd live plus media box and i have a external hard drive connected to it and i want to be able to send files to it from my computer (i use to be able when they was both plugged into my router)

when i moved everything, i moved the wd live box closer to my cable modem, and i then realised my cable modem has 4 ethernet ports in the back.

so i got my wd box plugged straight into the modem (port 2)
my laptop is plugged into my wireless router which is plugged into port 1 on the modem.

im guessing there both on different subnets, so thats why i cant find my wd box anymore on my laptop? is there a way to get it going this way as i dont want to run another long cable to the modem. thxs for your time , shawn

It's basically because your modem and router have 2 different IP addresses which is causing your computer to not see the wd box. Here is what you need to do.

So basically you have a modem/router combo unit. This procedure should still work but I've never actually tried it on a combo unit before.

The 2 routers must be in the same subnet. So change the internal IP address of router 2. For example...

Router 1 IP address - 192.168.1.1
Router 2 IP address - 192.168.1.2

Whatever the IP address is for the modem/router just change the last digit for the IP address for the second router.

Turn dhcp off in router 2.

So you have an ethernet cable going from the modem/router to the second router correct? If so, then you must plug the ethernet cable into one of the 4 lan ports not the internet port.

This should get you back on track.
