How do I change icons?

Hi,

I've just downloaded a pack of .ico icons and I was wondering if you could tell me a a way to change the default icons, eg. In the start menu the icons for my computer and my documents can be changed to what I want?

Also, can I change the default icon for file types?

Thanks a lot for your help! :)

The easy and fast way after opening the pack of icons into a folder created for them is to right click on the shortcut and click the "change icon" button which is seen in the shortcut tab after you click on properties. For individual files like executables for programs you can create desktop shortcuts and change the icons as well as renaming them to appear as the original exe files.

In the start menu the options change there. You can open, explorer all things, delete some of them, hide/unhide icons in the system tray, and even open the add/remove startup prgrams and task manager. But those in the system tray would only see compatability changes.

When you right click on any desktop item you go to the properties link at the bottom and click on that first. When the properties screen appears you then choose the center tab that says "shortcut" and look down at the center button. That will say "change icon" on it. You can change the icon for the recycle bin. But that has to be done in the "customise desktop" settings. For that you would first right click on the desktop then choose the customise option. Once the change icon button is clicked on you simply browse for the new icon and click the apply button once that is selected.

The one thing here to remember is that if you can make a desktop shortcut of something you can always change the icon through the properties. You can even rename the shortcut to show "myicon" instead of "shortcut to myicon". I'm always changing those anyways! :D
