How do I check if my HDD works?

I have had a 500gb hdd for a few months now. It got formatted, then I put it in an ESD bag and then in a drawer. I bought another 500gb hdd to use it.

How can I check to see if the first one still works?


Like, use gparted and fully format it?

I want to hook it up as a secondary storage. But see it in 'My Computer'.

I dont see why it wouldnt work. Just install it in your computer, connect it up, and then when you boot into Windows see if it can be written to. If theres no data on it that you need then just format it.

agreed. plug and go. but if it just buzzes, give it a rap. sometimes the lubricant for the motor gets sticky, and the motor is not strong enough to get past it.
