how do i create a backup disk for Windows XP?

i went into accesories and clicked system tools and back up, i popped in a cd (702 mb of space) and when i go to click next after selecting where i wanted to burn it/save it it says "the backup file could not be used, please ensure it's a valid path and you have sufficent access" what am i doing wrong here?
