okay...so I feel like a total nub right now because I have to forum this.
But I have two 512MB RAM sticks in my comp. It's a Dell with Ubuntu 8.10 on it.
it's apparent capacity is 256MB. And I figured I would have to do something in BIOS.
I really can't figure it out... :/

help if you can?

So you have two 512MB sticks and your motherboard only Supports up to 256MB? There are not settings in bios that can make your motherboard support more ram but I've heard of bios updates that can do that. I don't no if thats true or not.

so sounds like you have 1 gb of ram installed and the computer is only recognizing 256 mb? Could be something in Ubuntu and if the motherboard supports atleast 1 gb of ram and also supports the type of ram you are using then its probably not a hardware problem.

Did you read my reply in your OTHER thread about this same topic? http://www.computerforum.com/139803-ram-help.html

When you first boot your computer hit either the f12 or f 2 key, that will get you into the bios, then do what it said on the other topic you posted.

EDIT: here is the link again. http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=45CB81FFA5CA7304

Press F2 when the Dell logo appears. Press every few seconds until the message Entering Setup appears.

Also, make sure you have the same type of ram in both slots. Non ecc and ecc will not work together in your system. You really want matched ram for dual channel.
