how do i re format my laptop

Hi i bought a laptop off ebay and its very very slow.
After running norton i found over 120 virus etc, it has spam and all kinds of junk i just dont want. Basically i want to make it brand new by reformatting but have never done this. On my PC i just put a cd into my c drive and it reformats it for me but i only have the Windows XP installation disks for my laptop.
Can anybody help me out as it takes about 5 minutes just to start up my laptop and i cant take this anymore.

You can use those. If you have no data you want saved all you have to do is boot from the CD and when it comes to the menu tell it no I don't want to repair or launch the recovery console. After you do that it will come to a screen with your partitions and HDD's listed. Delete all the partitions then recreate them/it. Then hit enter and tell it to format and partition in NTFS or Fat32 (not quick).
 
You can use the installation discs (if there bootable), if not, why cant you use the same cd that you used on your pc?
