How do i Re-invigorate an older Laptop

Hi all,

I have an old Dell Laptop that I want to format and give to a friend who has no budget. The Laptop will only be used for surfing (through a wi-fi card that is already installed) and possibly a bit of MS Word use. The computer has a 500mhz pIII processor and 192mb of memory and currently has Windows XP installed. Although it works ok at the moment it can often be very slow when loading up webpages and can hang for a long time also. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on any way to speed this pc up? For example, would I be better off with an older operating system such as 98 or ME?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Doug

Maybe a stick of memory could help, and you should be fine running Xp.

What you can change in a laptop hardware is quite limited, Which is annoying.

You can either find some more RAM (I imagine that laptop can support up to either 256 MB or 512 MB of RAM) or install windows 98 on it. If you have a copy of MS Office, just use that, or download and install OpenOffice from OpenOffice.org.
