How do I rearrange PDF page numbers?

I have a pdf document / book (almost 1,800 pages long). The first few pages are numbered as i, ii, iii, iv and so forth. Chapter 1 starts on page 1 in the book. Of course, in "pdf pages" page i is seen as page 1, ii as page 2 and so forth.

How can I match up pdf pages with book page numbers so that if I want to go to page 999 of the actual book, I can just type in 999 in the pdf page to go directly to that page?

I have nitropdf to edit pdf files, but I don't know if that will do it.

In my Linux xpdf application there is a feature at the bottm of the page where you can input the page that you would like to see then hit 'go' . I am sure there is some variation of this with the pdj type program you are using.
