How do I set up an ftp connection?

I have some home videos that I want to share with family and since the files are too big to email, I was wondering how I can set up an ftp connection from my computer to theirs. Basically they would just get the ftp link from me and then via internet explorer, they can see my folders and download the videos. Oh yeah, how secure would that be? Of course I don't want to compromise security and have an open door for someone to tap into my computer. And how fast could they download things? I assume it is dependent on how fast my computer can upload them.

The other option is to upload them to a file-hosting service, but since they are private home videos, I don't really want them in some server.

The last option is to burn them on dvd and mail them, but I thought I would give the "modern tech" version a try if it makes sense to even try it.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the help.

Hello.

Well, if you use a decent FTP server side program (The one I use is Bulletproof FTP), create individual logins with passwords for your family members only then it'll be absolutely fine. Use a fairly high port that nothing else would use so you can easily monitor it, such as something like 4505 and you should be pretty secure. How fast people can download from you has barely anything to do with your computer, more so to do with your upload speed for your Internet connection. What is your internet connection?

Hope this helps,
