How do I use a Tablet?

As a Senior and not familiar with the electronic gadgets they have nowadays, I bought yesterday a Tablet and played around with it a little bit.
Not having a Smart Phone and not familiar with an OS using symbols, rather than a keyboard/mouse input, I soon got lost. (This Tablet uses Android 4.4) My question is, is there a instruction manual how to use the Android language somewhere? (If it can be called that way). I have a hard time navigating around, and the manual given is rather short and vague. For example, how do I get a keyboard when I am on the Internet? (For example to search for something.) Or how do I get anything in general, for that matter? What do I look for if there is no symbol for it?
I am guessing that most people not familiar with how things work, just start tapping around and see what happens, and I might have to do the same thing
(BTW - is Windows 8 not working like Andriod? I heard something to that effect.)
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks fellows, this was a great help. Looking through the manual, I realise that it indeed is a complete new ball game. There are really no similarities between this and Windows, and using a Tablet requires the use of a completely different operating method.
Most users are prepared, I am sure, because they already use Smart Phones, and similair OSes are used, but for me it is like learing a new language.
I am sure that it will take me some time to get some proficiency in using the Tablet.

I had the same problem after receiving a Samsung Galaxy tablet. I went to a local store and bought a book (Samsung Galaxy Tablet for Dummies). Its a start. They also have'em for intermediate to advanced or even advanced. Plenty of color pages for reference also.
