How do I wipe my hard drive clean

Is there a way to wipe a hard drive clean or do I need some kind of program to do it? If a program is needed, are there any that can be downloaded for free? I am a novice at this, so please reply in simple terms. Thanks.
 
you mean you want to reformat it. what operating system are you running. if your running xp just pop in the cd click reinstall and then it will tell you somehere before you reinstall if you want to format and do that and it will wipe everything off the harddrive and it will reninstall the operating system
