how do i?

Ok, i can get around ok on the computer with the proper info and whatnot. Can someone help me how to figure out what i am working with though. What i mean is tell me how to figure out like what my internet stuff is, meaning like wheter i have ethernet broadband and stuff like that?

Do you know if you have a cable or DSL internet connection? If so, then you have broadband.

basically

if your broadband comes over the same sort of line as your cable TV does, its called cable / dsl broadband

if it comes over the phone line, it could be either ADSL (broadband) or dialup (not broadband). If it is "always on" e.g no need to dial in / you can use it and your phone at the same time, then it is almost certainly ADSL broadband.

In terms of connection, if it connects to your pc using a cable similar to a phone jack, then it is ethernet, and if it connects using usb, then its not.

DSL and ADSL both come over the phone line, the only difference between DSL and ADSL (AFAIK) is that ADSL has faster download but slower upload than DSL, other than that they'r pretty much the same technology (if I go it right).

yeah but you generally dont get DSL over phone lines
because most lines are copper POTS and ADSl helps them maximise the bandwidth

most companies will use DSL to refer to cable, even if its not technically correct

well according to jdbennets instructions i would say i have ethernet broadband thanks for the help. on that. now my question would be

1. How do you know if PPPoe is required?(user id and password to accsess provider)

2.If so would that be your user name and password for your 192.168. thing account or is it your ssid and wepkey password?

3. How do you know if a dhcp is used? (ip address ,should be set to auto or manual)

4. And whether to set a dns server address automatically or manually?

5.can you still be using a wi-fi wireless connection and ethernet at the same time?

The reasoning for these questions is trying to set up a online game account for a ps3, and i have done it for that but you have to set it up seperatlly for ps2 games. thanks for any help.

PPPoe has nothing to do with the router or wireless password, those are set on your end, and no one else has control over it.

You can be connected via wireless and wired, but only one is being used to send traffic.

1)dont know, never used it
2) no its neither of them a different one
3) its nearly always DHCP
4) either
5) yes
