How do these compare?

Right now I have a Pentium 4 3.0GHz CPU in my desktop computer. I'm getting a laptop that has "Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)" how do they compare? I see the 1.8GHz is lower than 3.0GHz but I really have no idea if having 2 cpu's makes it batter. They only thing I can think of is you add up 1.8GHz and 1.8 GHz... Any help is good. Thanks.

The dual-core is worlds faster than the p4.

A dual-core is a single chip with two cores stuck inside. These cores are much more advanced than a P4 core, they have shorter pipelines, Higher IPC rate (instructions per clock), A better all-around architecture. This is what makes it better, it's like comparing a Blunt club to a Rapier.

But you can't just add the two cores together.. Some applications will not benefit from a dual-core. The programs themselves have to be compatible with the chip, they have to be multi-threaded to allow both processor cores to work on a single application. Multi-threaded apps, as well as multi-tasking itself will benefit by a dual-core however.

Realize that most apps will benefit from a dual-core in the very near future, And that multi-core chips are nothing, if not the future.

Ok, finially I understand. Thank you. Just one more question. I enjoy getting on after work to play a little bit of Battlefield 2142. The settings call for a 3.0 Ghz CPU. Does having a Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz) equal a 3.0GHz CPU? Thanks alot.

The 3.0GHz is the clock speed of a p4 they're asking for. You're c2duo should be moe powerful eventhough it runs at 1.8GHz because of its architecture (as explained above). So basicly yeh your processor should be able to run the game. About 1.8GHz c2duo being equal to a 3.0GHz pentium 4 i think (not 100% sure) that the core 2 duo should be more powerful.

salman.
