how do they know my location?

im sure this is 20th time this has been asked, but how is it, that when i go to a site, some advertisement knows my location. the ads usually say something like "get a mortgage in alabama" or "find a home in [My city]". some even list "hot singles" in my city and cities near mine as well! whats up with that??
 
Ip address. Only your ISP can pinpoint exactly where you live but anyone with the know-how can use it to figure out your general location, down to your city.

"Meet real girls from portland!" Lol yeah, right.
 
theres is a addon script kinda like the hit counters you see on sight thats gives the IP address of anyone the access the sight, not sure of the names since i have not used one in years

they use satellites to look into your house and see what websites you are on. then they have trained dolphins upload location-specific advertisements.















that would be so awesome! actually, yeah, they are right above. IP addresses have registered locations, basically, it runs a semi-tracert that looks for the location of the first hop, not your actual IP address, then depending where that is, it loads the ads
 
edit : ive noticed on some site the info is wrong, the IP aand the Browser is right but not the ISP name
 
some time get them that say like

buy cheap cars in unknown
others it get my town never mind my city spot on
 
Tracking servers and the cookies they place are part of the problem. Blocking third party cookies will solve part of the problem.
Yahoo is probably the number one offender for spyware and selling user info to advertisers, besides porn and other "adult" entertainment sites. Myspace is number 2
If you have firefox, download and install adblock plus, and subscribe to every filter on the list and most of those ads will disappear.
