How do Viruses/Trojans/Worms get created

I was just wondering how do they get created.

Are there some people sitting and doing nothing else than creating this kind of stuff. Or is it some kinds of errors on servers, in programs or anywhere else.

However all viruses aint created by humans. The holy grail for virus writers is the polymorphic virus, an ingenious piece of code that is able to change its own source code without human interference and create modified versions of itself. They could be a pain in the a**, as your av software could reqognice the first version, but suddenly it "mutates" before it hits your computer. Thats a comfortable thought. :D However they do of course need to be made by a human in the first place.

Many people write viruses so on almost as a mean of proving their skills. Some say they do it as a legal experiment with "ai". Some do it to compete with the av community, sending their creations directly to an av company. And some to it to get the admiring looks from their peers, "Look at this beaty!". There are many reasons. Lots of viruses are made to wreck havoc, but thats not always the sole reason as most people tend to believe.

Are you sure about that?

Thats another rumour. And theres another stereotypical belief that antivirus software programmers makes viruses themself to show off their own products. But you cant say either off this with any certainty. I would say paying outside people to make viruses would be rather risky leaving a loose thread. Besides if they did, how would any of us know beyond the point of speculation? For antivirus developers to contribute to the virus production, when there are so many people already making them makes little sense. Although it has been pointed out by Sarah Gordon, an authority on the field, that older security professionals tend to contribute through experimenting with viruses, probably with good intentions. Besides antivirus companies prefer to hire programmers with experience from other fields. I wont say this has never happened, but you cant say with certainty that it has either.
