How do you leave your machine when you head away from it? I'm just curious... For those unsure of the methods(hopfully I got them all) There's of course on or off, then basic suspend(usally still has fans running) suspend to ram(shuts everything off but keeps data in the RAM) and hibernation(shuts down but keeps a copy of what's in RAM. Must run though POST)

Depends on how long I am going off for. Usually I leave it on all day, then when I go to sleep I shut it off.

Hhe

L'hibernation pour moi. It allows me to boot up fast without programs like the Firewall and Antivirus slowing it down on startup.

Try suspend to RAM. As long as the machine still has power, it's much quicker than hibernation. No post, and it dosn't have to save or reload the contence of the RAM.

Off, it always overheated if I left it on longer than say, 6 hours. With my new AMD setup, I think I might be able to leave it on though, because of cooler temps.

On, nearly 24/7, apart from sundays, that my maintenace day, updates etc.... the music server and file servers however stay on 24/7/365 (its not just file hosting for internal network clients ya see....

i turn it off when i sleep or when ever away for long periods of time, as my dad says its using to much energy and costing him alot....

how exactly do you suspend to RAM?

You dont have the choice of "lock". Whenever im not using my comp i press CTRL+ALT+DEL+K, and it locks it, then my monitor turns off automatically.

In BIOS, change the Suspend mode to STR3 (or something to that extent), then when you suspend it will suspend to ram and it will be pretty much like turning it off.

I usually just leave it on, unless I'm going to be going for more than a day. But I do have the monitor set to shut off as well as everything else except the hard drives...

I fold, so my computers are generally on 24/7 except for maintenance and such. I turn the monitors off when they are not in use, though.

i give it a kiss and i wave goodbye

What do they call that fetish? :D

I'm away alot but the machines is always running (server etc). Unless i'm away for more than 5-6 weeks, then I usually turn them off.
