Okay I've set up the router and the internet is working fine on my laptop but I can seem to find the files from the desktop computer. I wanted to transfer my whole music libary(about 4.5GBs) onto the laptop becuase dads complaining about it. I've put all my songs in a folder on the desktop called 'Music' and I've right clicked it and selected "Share folder" or something like that but when I get on the laptop how do I find it? Do I need to put it in a special folder or what? Any help would be appriciated.

Have you set up your network connection? You have to share a whole drive and then stick your music folder under that drive. Then go on your laptop and go under My network connection and it will be there, assuming that you have setup your network corectly.

I am also curious, you said that you can find the files on your desktop from your laptop, how come now you can't?

Nope I havent seen it on the laptop yet, justs the desktop.
I'm not sure what you mean exactly as I hardly know anything about networks I just followed the instructions on the cd that came with the router. Do I need to change settings on either of the computers anywhere? Please I was hoping to get this done tonight and if I could it would be great.

Uhhh no...

You just share the folder by the option of right clicking (as you said you did)

You access the drive you can go through my netowrk places.. or you can type this in internet explorer window.

\\computername
\\localip

To get the computers local ip go into a cmd prompt and type ipconfig.
Should be a 192 number...

Okay the thing is its my main computer is not showing up in My Network Places what do I have to do to make it show up on my laptop and let me veiw and copy its files on mine?

Please can someone help me. On my laptop when I go to my network places it has the name I assigned my workgroup (HOME) and i can open that and it has to folders, DYLAN (My laptop that I'm using) and FAMILY (The desktop I'm trying to access) I can open the DYLAN folder and it has all the things your expect but it wont let me open the FAMILY folder. When I try this on the desktop the same thing happens (I cant get into the folder DYLAN but I can open FAMILY).

Now basically all I want to do is transfer a folder called 'MUSIC' that I have selected to be shared and moved to my documents. On the desktop when I go into network places and I get to that folder and look at everything inside. But I cant on the laptop. If you know what I'm doing wrong please tell me I'm desperate

Why don't you just write the whole thing to a CD or flash drive or floppy disk?

4.5 gb would take a while.

Windows xp? or something else? Make sure when you right click on, and enable sharing... you also allow netowrk users the ability to change files.

When you click on the folder does it give you a permission error?

So you can only see the current pc your on in the network computer available?

Try doing it manually (type into IE url bar)

From dylan type \\family
From family type \\dylan

Or even farther\\family\music

Yer its XP on both.
Yer I have ability to change files activated.
Yer when I go to look the other computer on the network it says I don't permission to access the computer, contact the admin.
I typed \\family\music and it said 'Network path not found'
What can you suggest?
