How do you trace computer parts to computer

Hi, I just googled computer forum and stumbled upon this website. I need to know this because my laptop was stolen pretty recently (1.5 months ago) and I think that I may have found who did it. They are selling a laptop screen that's from the same make and model. I think they are selling my laptop in parts. I do have lojack and so far no word from the man on my stolen property. I know that all the parts have some sort of product code or serial or whatever it's ID, and I want to know how to trace it back to the computer, so that I may find out for sure if the screen came from my laptop. And if I found out it did, I would automatically have proof, so I would be good to go. Oh yeah also I already reported it to the police. I did that right when it happened. But they are police so they are worthless when it comes to getting your stolen stuff back. Anybody know if there is a way to do this and how? Thanks.

Contact manufacture with serial information. they might have a trail. Don't know. Good luck with this adventure.

Right, but what I was going to do is meet up with him to buy it, because it's someone I don't know, and take down the number, and do that. But it escaped my mind that he could simply remove the sticker using perhaps his nail, and thus make it untraceable. Is there a way to do it besides the number on the sticker method?

if you bought it you should be able to call and ask. I do not throw away receipts either. Do you have it. Use a credit card. call them. Ya need some kind of trail. then maybe the manufacture can help.

Have you updated the police with the new information? I know they sometimes don't seem to do much but that is because they have no leads. Let them know?

If it is like the screen from my HP, It will have a s/n and p/n laser etched to the back of the LCD. You would be able to see the damage from removal of said numbers.

I seriously doubt that manufacturers keep track of the serial number of each individual part in a laptop, and unfortunately there is no correlation between the serials of the individual parts and the serial of the laptop as a whole. And if the serial has been removed then there is definitely no way to tell it apart from any other.

Like tremmor said, your best bet to contact the manufacturer, but I wouldn't give my hopes up.
