How does fan speed controller work?

hey guys, i was just wondering how does a fan speed controller work? Like one of those that fit into a 5.25'' bay. Do you connect the molex to it then connect your fans off of the controller or does it work differently?

you connect the controller to the psu via molex. then connect the fans to the controller, by the 3 pin wire. if your fans dont have a 3 pin wire, you will need a 4 pin to 3 pin cable

so the fan controller itself doesn't eat up power right? it just adjusts it for the fan.

well my fan controller has 4 LED's on, so it eats up a tiny amount of power. but yeah, the just adjust the fans voltage
