how easy is it for a motherboard to fail?

What did you do to it? Install any new hardware? Touch anything you werent supposed to? Power surge? Lights flicker. Anything strange?

How do you know that it was the mobo? What were the symptoms?

And, in answer to your question, very easy if it is dell.

it could be ur PSU
It could essentially be any part, if the person doesn't know waht he's doing....(not insinuating anything, just making a point that we don't have enough info :D )

im not really sure what happend but the computer just froze and wouldnt turn off properly, when i finally got it to turn off it wouldnt start up properly.....i phoned the dell helpline did what they asked and they concluded that the motherboad had failed...

Yeah Well DELL told my sister to buy a new computer cause its not worth saving it. So I go over to look at it and the boot sequence was messed up. Problem fixed in 10 secs. What a joke dell is.

You shouldn't promote against Dell like that in your sig, they might go bankrupt.

It would help a great deal if you can describe the sequence of events after you power up the PC. We do not have any info on what the cause can be without an accurate description. As for Dell, I am not a big fan but that goes for HP's and Compains also. Any computer can go at any time regardless of age. What I find most problems are caused from power spikes. Most people choose to protect their computers with a $5 surge protector. You get what you pay for.
