How enough is enough?

I just tried overclocking my CPU for the first time, and it was surprisingly easy. I'm using CPU-Z to see all the little details of the adjustments.

My CPU is a S. 939 AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2 GHz.

My multipliers have not been changed from x11. I have only been adjusting the BUS speed in small increments to slowly break in the CPU. Initially starting at BUS speed 200 MHz x 11 multiplier = 2.2GHz, I now have it OC'ed +200MHz to 2.4 (218MHz x 11).

My thermal sensor on the bottom of the CPU's heatsink reads between 27c and 28c. However, I had some dubious feelings of the tape I used, so I'm going to reapply some thermally conductive adhesive tape that I just bought to get a more accurate reading.

But for now, I can play Counter-Strike: Source without the temperature reading above 30c. I can usually play it with the temp staying around 29c. But I still expect the reading to be a bit higher after I replace the tape.

Anywayz, on to the point!

Within what temperature should my OC'ed CPU safely be? What is a safe percentage-wise increase for OC'ing my CPU? I have it OC'ed right now 9% above it's standard clock (0.9 x 2.2GHz is about 200MHz).

I'm thinking about bringing it to either 2.6GHz or 2.8GHz, which would be 18% or 27% increases from 2.2GHz.

It does not seem that I can adjust the multiplier from BIOS, but if I could figure it out, would it be better to OC my CPU in both the multiplier and the BUS speed? This way, I could just OC the multiplier from 11x to 12x and then OC the BUS speeds in smaller increments for higher core clocks.

whatch ya'll thinkz?

Your cpu may be cool but bringing up the fsb to oc the memory will likely see board temps climb as well as the memory's. Most sommonly the ffsb is lowered at first when trying to bring up the multiplier in small increments. You have to tweak the system carefully until you find the ideal settings to oc at. If you go to an overclockers forum where these people max hardwares all the time they can usually give you some good tips.
