how good is crossover?

Linux offers a "for sale" program called crossover that lets you run some windows software. I would like an evaluation by someone who has used it, does is only run productivity like winword or does it work with video capture and magic jack. I'm interested in using video capture and editing software and am having trouble downloacing and installing cinelerra.

have you tried installing under wine, or if really needed a VM?

and if not, there's plenty of freeware alternatives. Look at what's packaged with Ubuntu Studio, should give you some good alternatives.

Crossover is wine repackaged and 'optimised' for use with certain Windows programs. Sometimes it works better (because the developers know what settings to use and the average user does not), other times it doesn't.

I made the mistake of purchasing Crossover Games so that I could play some older titles and for me it did not help at all-- I had the same problems under Crossover that I did trying to install under wine.

So essentially, it is wine with winetricks already prepackaged with it...

Edit: Have you tried playonlinux? It literally is wine with winetricks setup and ready to go with a nice gui interface.
