How hot do hard drives get? (need advice for ext enclosure)

Hi,

I want to build an external hard drive and I was wondering if I need to get an enclosure with a fan or not. It will be a 500gb hd and I will be mainly using it as a music storage device.

And how do the hard drives work? I've been searching the internet and could not find the info I wanted. If I was to play a song from the external hd, does it cache the song in the computer's ram or hd cache? and is this the same if i'm choosing a song (just looking in a file at files)?

And can any one recommend any enclosures or hard drives? I was thinking of getting a vantec nexstar 3 or nexstar gx with a western digital caviar SE16, hitachi deskstar or seagate barracuda 7200.9.

Thanks in advanced.

Ken

my secondary hdd (used for extra storage) stays at 29C its a 40 gb western digital. i only accsess it about 4 times per 8 hours its on power manegement after 30 mins it turns off And my main hdd stays at 32C but i have a fan blowing air towards it, its a maxtor 80gb

I used to have a fan on my WD Caviar SE16 250Gb SATA 3Gb/s and it ran at 36C. Just a bit hot for my taste, but that will soon be fixed with some heatpipes and another fan. About that dead fan, it was an Ultra, that explains it, enough said.
