How long is the typical wirless signal?

I use a linksys wireless network card (with the so called speed booster) and I use a linksys router. now after the dumb cable guy decided it was cool to hook up the cable to the other side of the house my wireless connection is about 36 feet away with the ceiling in the way. I dropped from 5 bars of connection to 2 bars. I think thats actually abnormal. another side question though, does windows vista lower connection? I feel that vista has really slowed down even my internet activity.
 
the drop in strength is an issue, and may be slowing you donw, although you internet bandwidth will be no-where near you network bandwidth (even at 2 bars).
35feet without direct line of sight is clearly whats causing the problem and you may need to invest in a stronger arial.
