How many fans/heatsinks needed?

That is my question. I'm researching to build a budget PC (my first), and every penny counts. I'm going to use some weaker components (Patriot 256mb RAM, 7200rpm hard drive, Kaser 9200SE) and I want to know if case fans are necessary. Also, should I put only a heatsink on the processor? Or do I need only a fan? Should I get both? Your help would be appreciated.

You're definitely going to need a heat sink/fan on the CPU (if you're buying the retail CPU it will come with it). As for the airflow, I would as least get a couple case fans. A lot of cases will come with at least one. I know your watching your money but $5 shouldn't be too much to spend :)

off topic: actually i am wondering that if a case only comes with a single fan slot at the back, how do u add couple more? i know there are pci slot fans out there....but i am confused...lol

Well the easiest thing would be to just buy a PCI slot fan of which I've heard varying degrees of effectiveness (from "okay" to "piss poor"). The other option would be to make your own case fan slots by cutting (aka modding) your case wherever you can fit them. Personally I would only do this if I were certain that extra fan(s) would actually help the cooling.

I am 100% sure.

I am 100% sure it comes with the HSF (Heatsink fan). Trust me on that. I know so because these BOXED versions always come so. The OEM versions do not have that.

JAN :D

I'm getting an Intel® P4 2.4AGHz with motherboard. It at least comes with a fan (included with warranty) but doesn't say anything about a heatsink. It does say "box" CPU, so I think it should. Would it?
Yes, boxed is just another way to say retail. It should come with an aluminum heatsink with a copper core.
