How many memory sticks do i need ?

Hi guys,

I don't know much about computers but i'm buying a workstation soon and need some advice on some technical issues which i don't really understand. :confused::)

I'm looking at a HP Z800 and a Dell T5500 which is capable of Dual Processor.
For now i started off with a single - 6 Core Xeon processor, might upgrade to a second processor later on.

So i just need to focus on the single processor's memory, in which i'm looking at a 12GB memory, i was advised that to enable the computer to perform at its best it would require me to use up all 3 channels on the CPU which makes 4GB x 3. :)

It is stated that HP Z800 have 12 DIMMS , Dell T5500 9 DIMMS
I'm rather confuse by 9 DIMSS / 12 DIMMS, what are they ? HP stated 12 DIMM slots so what happens if i use a single 6 core Processor with a 12 DIMM slots how many channel do i have to fill up ? Is it the same thing ?:confused:
 
The biggest consideration in how much memory you need is what you're going to be doing with the computer. What programs will you be using mainly?

The number of "DIMMs" refers to the number of memory modules in the computer. In this case I think it's referring to the number of available slots rather than the actual number of memory slots being used.

I concur.
If it has say 6 DIMMs available, in tri-channel, (I didn't notice the chipset, my bad) then you would want multiples of three. If only dual channel, like 4 DIMMS or 8 DIMMs then you would want to buy in multiples of 2.
 
It has 12 slots. If you have a 64 bit OS. Supports 192gb. of Registered DDR3 1066. Supports 24 gb. of Unbuffered DDR3 1333. Supports 96 gb. of Registered DDR3 1333.

I will be runnning a Window 7 - 64bit OS, the programs that will be install is mainly Solidworks, Autocad, 3Ds Max, Inventor, Adobe Creative Suite/Master Collection, Bunkspeed or other rendering programs. Maybe sketchbook pro too.
Workstation used for 3D modeling, designing, renderings.:):)

I was wondering if anyone is doing the same thing, how much memory do you need for a smooth flow. :D
