Hi all,

got a question for ya all so hope ya can help me.

right, well i did a favour for one of my mates today, basically i reformatted his PC and setup drivers and programs, used his recovery discs on his laptop and also setup and configured his router and adapter to utilise internet sharing.

now i didnt ask him for any cash for this but hes decided on giving me £100 for the job altogether, even though i refuse to take anything he insists if i wont take that to give him a figure.

so im hoping someone can give me a realistic figure for the job that i did for him???

thanks in advance :D

How long did it take? Something between $20-$50USD an hour would be reasonable in my opinion. You'd be surprised how much computer techs charge.

took round about 5 -6 hours, im not overly sure to be honest as i wasnt clock watchin bt was partly due to his desktop being rather slow.

20 - 50 an hour wow didnt think that much could be made without ripping people off

he said the desktop took a while to load. my dell from like 2003-2004 takes about 6-7 minutes to load uggg.

It's a pound sign and it's almost 200USD. I would've taken it. 5-6 hours is a long time to not be compensated at least a little bit.

Let me tell u something. I would say that if he is just a mate, you can take the money or ask him to give half of it or what ever. If he is ur best friend or family friend, it is better to dont take the money and he may repay you once when you need him. But it is also depend on ur mate. I have a mate and I also repaired his PC when he faced something wrong in it and it wasnt working for 1 week. He called me and i went to his home and took 2hr to repair it. And you know what he did. He offered me a coffee !!!!!!!!!!! How ....... is that?? I wasnt expecting any amount of money at all. But wen he offered me a coffeeI was feeling like loosing my control. He didnt even said thanks. LOL

as an independent contractor myself on the side, my absolute minimum charge for any work is $50/hour and it scales up depending on the job. I also have a minimum of a one hour charge. So, if I complete a job in 5 minutes they owe me for the hour.

I start scaling my prices up on older OSes and older systems, because honestly I don't want to deal with them. data recovery I start at $100/hour. If I have to travel a far distance I add charges, etc.

Companies like geek squad charge like $150/hr so I do not feel bad starting at $50/hour. I can't even tell you how many times I have been to a location after geek squad has been there and totally thrashed a network and I had to clean up their messes.

For corporate work I tend to start at $100/hour. Over the last year I actually have a few steady clients that I help support on the side.

OTOH, I have also done tons of pro bono work for friends and local record labels and recording studios (that my friends work for)

Dont charge him a thing. He's a mate. You could call it a "you scratch my back ill scratch yours" favour. As in, if he's skillful at something, i.e a brickie or a sparky, then you could get him to do you something. The bloke over the road from got me to reformat his pc a few times, i dind't charge him a thing. Then a couple of months down the line, he gave me one of his mp3 players.
