How Much & How Many?

Just wondering, how many processes (when on average usage) does your machine have running within task manager when your doing something simple like just browsing the net and listening to music? How much does it have straight after boot too? Also what is the amount of available physical memory and what is your total?

Im on my laptop right now:

processes:53
after boot: i dont know
available physical memory: 470364
total:981480

The amount of processes seen right after the initial boot of Windows will depend on how many things start as well. The more programs you have installed will also see the most initial amount of memory used at that time before starting IE or any application. By itself XP along with the board will take a percentage usually of 196mb of ram. The number of hardwares installed can play a role there.

For determining the basic number of essential processes by Windows itself you would disable all startups with the msconfig utility in both the startup group and the services section while hiding all ms background services that are needed for Windows to run. Roughly 20 should be seen for Windows with repeat listings of some processes in that figure.

Yeah I just wanted to get an opinion on what most people were running to see if the amount I have running (38 with a fair amount of applications running) was an ok number.

Yeah 38 is a great amount, I have 50 and Not really a load of apps open, My windows runs fine and smooth with 50 an has done before with around 70, does usually depend what the apps are though:)

Three or four of the apps running under my username are for the bloody ati catalyst control centre drivers :\... annoying thing that is. They're all the same process too. CLI.exe. Is it normal to have three of them running at once within the processes? (I've never touched ATi cards before hence the lack of knowledge on them)

As mentioned before you will often see more then one listing for the same thing until you realize that one driver is loaded for the same process or the one item starts other things like loading some drivers. The Catalyst makes it easier to manage display settings along with configuring an extended desktop when using more then one monitor. For problems seen when gaming you can either disable or uninstall it. They used to have a control panel to use instead.
