There is a BIG performance difference. I would recommend the 7900GT over the 7600GT if you are a heavy gamer.
The different brands don't affect the performace to be honest, although they may use different coolers - so temperatures may differ. Also, some of them like to overclock the GPU. However, they are usually the same.

7600GT isn't a bad card, though... I have one and it can play FEAR very well at 1024x768 with max detail settings. FlatOut 2 runs at 1280x1024 with maxed out settings(neither game with AA or AF, though FlatOut would probably run with it just fine)

they are both competitive cards, but you should look into the 7900gt if possible.
also, bfg puts good coolers on their cards, but tend to o\c them too. also, if this is a big upgrade, you always want to check your psu's amps onall its rails, to make sure you don't need a new one

I'd get a 7600GT for $129 on newegg.com here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130054 and save the rest for a DX10 card in a couple months. I think you'll be happy doing that.
