How much RAM can my CPU handle?

Hey just a quick question,

My computer is running an AMD Duron processor at 1.0Ghz. I currently have 384 Mb RAM and am just wondering what is the maximum RAM this processor can handle before I upgrade.

The amount of ram your computer can take isn't determined by your processor, but by your motherboard. BTW, this thread should have been placed in the "memory" section.
 
Yes your motherboard should have a max ram. And that is all the ram ur computer can handle. Before you look to upgrade make sure you dont buy ram thats too large, then u are out of luck.
 
Those can usally max out at 512M per slot... A 1GHz is probably using SD-RAM, so either 1G or 1.5G...

Get CPUz and that'll give you more info; your mobo brand, slots, etc
 
No sir, I don't like it!

I tried that site out of curiosity, and it states my laptop can only go upto 512M. I will find countless examples of people using 1G SIMMs in here...
 
I not sure what that site is all about, I have 4 ram slots on my computer (I thought) but it says I can only have a maximum of 2gig ram installed being 2x1gb sticks, am I missing something here, or do 2 ram slot thingies go idle???

EDIT: Just Checked Everest Ultimate Edition 2006 and it says I am using 2 of 4 bays so surely if I ripped out the old ram I could fit 4 gig in right?

ive said this on othere post many cpus and mobos have trouble keeping that much memorie organized and it might slow ur cpu thats y it might be saying u can only use 2 gigs
 
Well windows home can apparently take a maximum of 3gig, and think my processor can handle it, would just be older ones that it would slow, mine still costs like £600 (although its Intel and over priced for performance).
 
NO. Not true, you can't diminish performance with more ram. Whoever or wherever you heard that from, told you a bunch of BS.
 
well tehy said that if u have 4 dims of ex i gig each wichg is what i wanted they said ur mobo wont be able to keep things organized and ur cpu will have trouble using that much memory wich will slow it down so if they wanted to they coulda said ok and charge me another 250 but they didnt so they lost money now y would any busenus do that if it was total bs
 
Erm maybe because half the time these people do not know what they are on about and got confused that it not doing anythign would diminish performance when really it would justbe left idle). I was speaking to someone who has a 9k gaming computer and has 8 gig of ram just because he could but as he ran xp pro just thought only 4gig would have been used lol other 4 werejust like in there for fun.
 
no, your cpu likes ram. More ram the better. Your computer only sticks stuff on the ram it needs, not the stuff it wants to. BTW, computers never get confused, they do edactly what they are told;)

Thats very true, untill true AI is invented as proper confusion is an emotion. You can get conflicting commands though. But if that was aimed at me I was talking about computer salesmen not the computer lol.
 
planning on doing with your compie? the processor should support 4gb because its a 32-bit processor, however your motherboard may be holding you back. does it support 184-pin ddr sdram? if so, you may be able to buy a stick of 512mb, maybe two. check how many slots your motherboard has. most motherboards support 1gb stick but to be sure get 512mb.

older ram like 168pin and such cost more for larger capacity sticks.

I don't like it either. I ran it, and it says that I my crappy Dell can take up to 2gb of ram. I'm currently using the max amount of ram it can take, 1gb.
