How much RAM I can Add

Hello,
I have a P6T Asus mother board. It states in it's specs under memory:

6 x DIMM, Max. 24GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066 Hz Memory
Triple Channel Memory Architecture

I have corsair 6GB (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600MHz already installed on my motherboard and wanted to add 3 more. Since it says the mother board can take a "Max. 24GB" I am assuming I have room for 18GB more RAM since i already used 6 GB, so I am looking at (3 x 6GB). Is this a correct assumption? and if so can anyone point me to a good one to purchase?

Much appreciate the help.

Regards,
Rene

Hello,

There aren't any 6 GB sticks, you'd likely be best off populating the rest with 4 GB DIMMs. It looks like there are a few instances of the boards recognizing 48 GB of RAM on 8 GB DIMMs but it's an 'unofficial' configuration.

ok gotcha, thanks for the info. What about DDR4 sticks, obviously my mother board says DDR3 but would it make a difference to try DDR4's instead?

DDR4 will not fit in DDR3 slots, motherboards that can use both memory types have two pairs of a different slots, one for DDR3 and the other DDR4.

Yeah you can't put DDR3 in DDR4. And even then the performance differences between the two aren't all that much.

If you can afford it I'd max it out at 24GB with 6x4GB sticks. Looks to me like it's a triple channel setup so best to stick to using 3 or 6 sticks though I guess filling the rest of the slots with 4GB DIMMs would probably work OK. You'd have 18GB total if you did that, but for the money it's probably worth just maxxing it out. :)

Make sure you get DDR3 - 1866 is pretty cheap now.

Thanks for your replies. Spirit, maxing it out sounds good, but I do not want to throw away my current 3 sticks. At least not yet :D However you brought me to another questions. If I kept my current 3 sticks which are DDR - 1600 and bought 3 more DDR3 - 1866 will they work well together since the MHz do not match?

Mixing different speeds of ram will make all ram run at the slowest of all sticks. So all sticks would run at 1600mhz.
