im customizing a new comp (compaq sr17oz i think) with an athlon 64 3500 and all...i get the choice of upgrading from 512mb to 1gb for 80 bucks...im a gamer and i was wondering if it is worth the 80 (and if itll play all those good games)

With today's games a minimum of 1 Gig is becoming/has become the standard.
this is true, but you can find good gaming RAM for less than 80 bucks, i know kingston hyperX RAM is pretty good and OCZ enhanced latency is pretty good as well. check these out also check out RAM 101 from praetor it will help u make ur decision,

P.S. i am buying 2 sticks of 512 MB of the OCZ, it is very good and has great reviews.

hmm...a lot of RAM questions in the desktop computers section...

well, anyway. a couple of questions. by upgrading, do you mean 512 TO 1 gig, or an ADDITIONAL gig to the 512? if you're buying a gig, i tend to wonder why its only 80 bucks...do you have any of the specs for this RAM?

80 bucks for a stick of 512 i guess, but i already gave my opinion on that above.

all depends what size of games you play if it is like battle feild 2 then you will need atleast a gig of ram

for BF2 you should have 2GB, for the rest of the newer games, no lower than 1GB.

If you are a gamer then you definitely want 1gb of ram. Even 2 gb's would be good as this allows most users to have a bit of bloat on the system such as Antivirus like Norton etc. You should still have plenty of ram left over for gaming with 2gb.

for BF2 you should have 2GB, for the rest of the newer games, no lower than 1GB.

Agreed, I've seen BF2 lag in areas with 1gb on my machine and when I added another 512mb (totaling 1.5gb) the lag in those certain areas disappeared. I've since upgraded to 2gb. 1gb x 2 sticks.

LOL that game will lag on 3.5/4GB of RAM even ... but thats not a fault of the hardware ... ;)

can you actually just add ram to existing amounts on ur PC...like if i got the 512mb could i just buy and extra 1gb and add that to it (to total like 1.5gb)???

i think you will void the warranty if you open the case, much less add hardware. i know a guy who put an extra hdd in his dell, then started having some problems, and they wouldnt touch it.

if youre not worried about it then go for it. make sure it supports that much though. im guessing a new computer will, but doesnt hurt to check.
