How much RAM?

My Dell laptop has 512 MB, however when I check the properties on my computer it only shows up 384 MB. Is a lower value normal or do I have a problem? (I have a shared graphics card set to 16 MB.)

Many thanks,

Na8

The laptop has a ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated Graphics card with an ATI Catalyst control center program. Using this utility I have set the UMA frame buffer to 16 MB. (Thinking about it - it was previous set on 64 MB and I could view 448 MB in my computer properties!). I wish I hadn't change this setting, it seems to have made things worse, doh. Any suggestions?

I took a look in the BIOS and couldn't find an option to set or change the amount of memory shared.

To clarify the problem:
Using the utility I have tried to change the shared memory size (16, 32, 64, 128, 256 MB are my options). Every time I re-boot - my computer properties shows that 128 MB has been shared. The utility however displays that the shared allocation is 16 MB regardless of what value I try to set it to:confused: .

Any suggestions?

Try going into the BIOS (F2 or DEL I believe), and look for the video options where you can set how much RAM is set aside for the video card.

the xpress 1150 chipset has hypermemory, this happens on some acer machine as the hypermemory feature isn't documented and we get a lot of customers sending their machines in saying that something is wrong.

This is perfectly normally behavious for this graphics chip.
It has some dedicated graphics memory and will take the same amount of video memory.

Hope that clears it up for you
